Mentrau Iaith Cymru

About Us

The Mentrau Iaith (Language Initiatives) are dynamic, voluntary community organisations that support and promote the Welsh language across Wales, and Mentrau Iaith Cymru supports their work on a national level in order to increase the use of Welsh in our communities.

Menter Môn was established in 1995 with the main objective of making the most of the various resources available to us. Menter Iaith Môn was established as part of the enterprise agency in 1997, following a successful bid to the Welsh Language Board. 18 years on, Menter Iaith Môn delivers a wide range of services and activities to assist efforts to support the Welsh language locally, and provides opportunities for the island’s residents to use their Welsh.

The work is undertaken by a team of 8 members of staff and 4 regular freelance workers. Our work is supported by 18 volunteers. Our main office is located in the Town Hall, Llangefni, but many of our activities are held in our communities.

We are part of the national umbrella organisation, Mentrau Iaith Cymru, which provides consistent support and training to develop skills, to enable us to have influence on a national level and to support efforts throughout Wales to bolster the status of the Welsh language.

We believe in the importance of providing activities, events and services for people of all ages and from various backgrounds to demonstrate – and to prove, that you can live an exciting and fun-filled life through the medium of Welsh in Anglesey and elsewhere in Wales. We also believe that the Welsh language has an important role to play in regenerating, interpreting and sustaining the local economy, thereby securing a prosperous future for the island’s communities.

We work in the areas where there are large numbers of Welsh-speakers with the aim of maintaining and expanding the areas that are of strategic importance to the Welsh language. Equally important are the areas where there are fewer Welsh-speakers, where we work to give the Welsh language an important and valuable role in everyday life.

Irrelevant Skills? I can speak a little Spanish.

Secret (one that is evidently, no longer a secret!): I regularly dye my hair to conceal my grey hair!!
