‘Rhwydwaith Perfformwyr Ifanc’ (Young Performers’ Network) was established to nurture and develop Anglesey’s young talent in response to requests from young local bands for opportunities to perform on stage.
The idea was taken one step further with the establishment of the Rhwydwaith as a means of forming, nurturing and supporting young bands at the start of their performing journey. With our contacts in the music world, we draw in experts to provide specific training, and we work with Anglesey’s main festivals, including Gŵyl Cefni and Copperfest, and with the organizers of major national music events, including the National Eisteddfod/Maes B.
The project provides long-term opportunities for young people to form bands, to compose, to record and to put on their own gigs. Having gained these skills, knowledge and confidence, in time, our beneficiaries can put on their own events, make use of their new contacts and make an effective contribution to the Welsh music scene on Anglesey.
Rhwydwaith sessions are held under the guidance of professional tutors who are experienced in various aspects, including design, recording, performing and staging. The sessions are held on a weekly basis in our studio and practice space, Stiwdio 12 in Llangefni, as well as other community venues across the island.
Bands already established can also come to Rhwydwaith and take advantage of the support available. We wish to continue to establish a wide range of Welsh bands, and also to ensure that our beneficiaries have a range of skills that will enable them to put on events.
We are not just limited to those who are interested in music either – decorating a room, marketing, photography, sound and lighting are all important components of the event!
Training is therefore provided in the various aspects involved in putting on a gig, including decorating the room, poster design and marketing.
In 2015 the new bands put on gigs, Carma being one of the success stories of the year for Rhwydwaith. 3 gigs were held in Anglesey’s Secondary Schools over Christmas. A big gig was held in March with ‘Rhwydwaith’ bands (Madarch, Carma and Mr Annwyl) performing with Candelas.
This year, Carma have gone on to perform at the Anglesey Show, Gŵyl Cefni and Copperfest. They have also been part of a joint project involving Bocsŵn and Maes B.
The good work has continued into 2016 as a new band called A(n)naearol was established. The band has already drawn the attention of the Super Furry Animals as their song ‘Cysawd Yr Haul’ was included on the SFA podcast on the Pitchfork.com website
If you want to form a band, or are newly established or need support to take the next step as a band, contact the Bocsŵn team for further details.
